Introduction



Stamford University (Bengali: স্টামফোর্ড বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) is a private university in the Bangladesh. It was established in 1994 by the Private University Act. Previously it was known as a Stamford college group, later it was upgraded as private university of Bangladesh in 2002 and appeared as Stamford University Bangladesh. The university belongs to Stamford University & College Group. Stamford University is currenlty ranked as one of the top private varsities in Bangladesh. It is also having the highest number of students (around 18000) among all the private varsities in Bangladesh. At present, This group has 160 campuses[citation needed] in Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia and America. Stamford University is the first and only ISO certified university in Bangladesh.

Credit transfer

Stamford University provides credit transfer facility for its students to different reputed foreign universities. The university has already transferred more than 100 students of BBA, MBA, CSE and CSI programs to different universities of the USA, the UK, Canada and Australia. It has arranged joint degree programs and credit transfer programs with Claflin University, State University of New York and Monash University, Australia.

Criticism and controversy

On May 14, 2006, students of Stamford University went on rampage on two of its six campuses to drive a six-point demand. The demands include improve pharmacy department by setting up a laboratory and a library and also accreditation of the course by Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh, to insure to get a pharmacist's job. A lot of dissatisfactions and resentments have been raised by the students. They claimed the administration started charging them extreme admission, tuition, examination, registration, and tuition fees two years ago. Later on, Mashiur Rahman, a member of Stamford University Board of Trustees agreed to meet the six-point set of demands raised by the students.
